Why You Should be Looking After all of Your Skin – not Just Your Face
March 07, 2018
It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking you only need to look after the skin on your face and neck, but caring for the skin on your whole body is just as important.
When planning your skincare regime, you should never neglect your neck, the backs of hands and your décolletage – particularly when it comes to sun protection. When cleansing and moisturising your face, a good rule of thumb is to go right down to the top of your breasts. However, your full skincare routine should include your whole body. To make things easy, these DIY steps, when combined with suitable skincare products and treatments, will help ensure your skin glows with health all year-round.
We cannot stress this enough – SPF is must, even if it’s cold and cloudy outside. Sun damage often fast-tracks the visible signs of ageing, attributing to as much as 90 per cent of the skin’s ageing process. This is because over exposure to the sun’s harsh UV-rays can change the texture and weaken the elasticity of your skin, so always make sure you slip, slop, slap.
Only Use Gentle Soaps
Harsh soaps and body washes can easily strip the moisture from your skin. It’s important that you use gentle, soap-free products when you shower, and that you try to keep the water set to a warm temperature, as hot water can also dry out your skin.
Moisturising your face and body should be part of your daily routine. Daily moisturisation will help restore the hydrolipidic film that covers your epidermis. For best results, rub your moisturiser in after you get out of the shower and have patted your skin dry with a soft towel.
Dress for the Weather
Have you ever noticed that your skin tends to get dryer in the cooler months? This is because sharp, cold air, and the artificial heat of ducted heating wreak havoc on it. When the weather is cold outside make sure you dress appropriately – scarves and gloves included!
Drink Plenty of Water
Our skin is made up of 64 per cent water, so it’s not hard to see why we should be drinking plenty of it. It’s believed that water consumption can increase the blood flow to the skin, improving its density and thickness. Without an adequate water intake, skin can start to look dull and lifeless, but when it’s well hydrated, plump and elastic, it’s less likely to crack and let in the particles that cause blemishes and irritations.
By consuming a healthy diet that contains plenty of (wrinkle fighting) antioxidants and hydrating healthy fats, like fish. Food rich in omega-3 fatty acids can keep cell membranes strong and elastic, while antioxidant-rich foods can help block the chemical reaction that leads to sun damage, among other things.
Get Plenty of Sleep
When you sleep, your skin goes into recovery mode. It’s during this time that your body’s cell production doubles and your skin’s stem cells start to replace aged cells with new ones, so getting your beauty sleep really is important.
Cigarette smoke is filled with carbon monoxide that displaces the oxygen in your skin, as well as nicotine that reduces blood flow. This can leave skin dry and discoloured. Smoking can also deplete vital nutrients, like vitamin C, which helps to protect and repair any skin damage.
Skincare Treatments That Will Nourish Your Whole Body
While maintaining a healthy lifestyle will work wonders on your skin, using skincare products are still important, especially if you need to combat any damage caused by harsh soaps, sun exposure and lifestyle factors.
